“Orange is cool-climate wine country: the vineyard peaks at a lofty 950m altitude.

“Mayfield has a homestead and several cottages that can be rented. I stayed in the Settler’s Cottage, which is the oldest and according to the history on display in the house, was used by Icely himself.

“The School House, built to educate the children of the property’s staff, is now the cellar door and there is a spacious tasting/dining area adjacent, which has an attractive outlook over a lake. Geese, ducks and guinea fowl waddle contentedly about.

“The 2022 vintage wines I tasted there… were polished and stylish. They will help Mayfield take its place in the upper level of Orange producers.”
