'Jonty met Otto' Cabernet Franc

Mayfield Vineyard Estate Range'Jonty met Otto' Cabernet Franc

2023 Cabernet Franc

Orange, New South Wales

A wine with lighter tannins and a focus on red fruit flavours, floral notes, and a herbal side; high acidity and moderately low tannin. It shows lovely roasted red pepper, raspberry sauce, jalapeño, fresh raspberry, and wet gravel. Flavours of sour cherry, smoky tomato, dried oregano, and sweet pepper dominate.

Lovely, joyous vibrancy to the wine - bright, perky, puppy black fruit that pops in the glass! Similarly conveys itself on the palate: core of bright and glossy black fruit, acids in balance and bring flow. Lovely, fine chains of silken tannin to thread it all together. A joyous release, and one that provides potential further claim for Cab Franc to potentially be Orange's 'thing'.

Jonty Met Otto eh? A curious name and one of those I always seek to find the story's meaning. Named for viticulturist Charles Simons and his young family, this Cabernet Franc from the Orange region's Mayfield Vineyard is a beauty. There is a brightish hue in the glass that immediately attracts the eye. Abuzz with red cherries, strawberries and crunchy red apples, red plums slowly build momentum. A curious flash of coffee grounds comes and goes with some black tea and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, there is something about its presence and shape that keeps calling me back. A very handy debut. Drink to five years+

I am a huge fan of Cab Franc, and this one is a cracker! Light and bright red/purple in colour, very attractive bouquet of red berries, florals and just a hint of violets, delightful, silky smooth palate with a lovely depth of vibrant flavours and a classy, lingering finish. A BRILLIANT EXAMPLE OF A GREAT emerging varieties.
