“The history of Mayfield dates back to 1815 when explorer William Charles Wentworth was granted a Mayfield Crown Grant from the governor of NSW. Today the Settlers Cottage is a heritage-listed homestead and popular accommodation. Vines were first planted in ’99 and Mayfield vineyard was born. Since ownership changed hands in ’21, Mayfield has been given a breath of cool, crisp Orange air from root to bottle under the guidance of co-owner, general manager and viticulturist Charles Simons. Single-vineyard wines, minimal intervention and a focus on elegance, refinement and vivacity are at its core.” -SHANTEH WALE

2022 Mayfield ‘1815’ Chardonnay – 95 POINTS

Elevation of 900m and 25-year-old vines; seven months in a combination of new and seasoned oak. Latent power from start to finish with the developing Mayfield signature style of finesse and grace. Lemon aspen, lime cordial and white nectarine. Crushed sandstone and struck match. A yoghurt creaminess is followed by darting acidity and a touch of phenolic bitterness on the finish. A steal at the price.

2022 Mayfield ‘Backyard’ Riesling – 93 POINTS

“Acknowledged as one of Orange’s most distinguished sites for riesling the Backyard Block sits at 925m elevation and faces due north. Picked in the cool of the night and pressed straight into stainless steel. Pungent lime skin, perfumed white florals, Granny Smith apples and steeped tea leaves. The wine shows finesse and delicate craftsmanship. The 5g/L of RS sits well into the wine with enough acidity to carry.”

2022 Mayfield ‘Five Rows’ Rose – 91 POINTS

“Cherry blossom pink hues. Made from both cabernets and merlot grapes. Crunchy watermelon, cranberry and pomegranate. Lovely ripe fruit sweetness with a rounded and full palate that leads to savoury sliced deli meats and pink peppercorn.”

2022 Mayfield ‘Sophie’s Godmother’ Sauvignon Blanc – 90 POINTS

“The Mayfield sauvignon blanc vines benefit from an elevation of 780m and have a vine age of 23 years. The cool 2022 vintage allowed for a long hang time and lovely physiological ripeness. Classic gooseberry and tropical fruits with crushed blue stone. The palate has a lively citrus feel and a fruity and classic expressive style.”
