The story of Mayfield

The history of Mayfield dates back to 1813 when the explorer William Charles Wentworth was the first to cross the blue mountains. As a thank you, he received “Mayfield” as Crown Grant from the Governor of NSW.

Mayfield passed into the ownership of Thomas Icely, who became famous for cattle, sheep and horse breeding. He was commemorated with the naming of “Icely Road”.

The property was then sold to William Tom, who discovered the first payable gold in Australia at nearby Ophir in 1851, which started the Gold Rush.

In 1885 Mayfield was purchased by The Crawford Family,  well-known English biscuit making barons. Producing 13 million biscuits a day, they ran one of Britain’s largest companies while also sheep grazing at Mayfield.

With the help of famed architect William Hardy Wilson, they built the homestead and the schoolhouse soon followed to educate the Scottish farm workers children. Margaret Crawford lived at Mayfield for 65 years and is responsible for planting the 100-year-old arboretum on the property.

In 1998 she sold Mayfield to the Thomas family, who immediately planted vines, and “Mayfield” became “Mayfield Vineyard”

During the Thomas era the property became one of the leading producers of cool climate wines, as well as making available the various historic cottages on the property for upmarket casual accommodation for many visitors to Orange.

The Eastham Family

In 2021 Mayfield,  was acquired by the Eastham Family, hailing from Orange. Later that year the Easthams also acquired the adjoining vineyard (which was previously a part of Mayfield). This added several grape varietals as well as having the romanticism of reuniting the original Mayfield property.
